About

Antonia Brown is an artist working in acrylics and natural dyes based in Durham, North Carolina. Brown began farming in Durham five years ago, shifting from her work in environmental conservation, and it has profoundly shaped how and what she creates.

Her work as a farmer and her life as an artist blend together to create pieces that are steeped in community and connection. Brown draws from the tradition of Black activists and horticulturists in the American South and is further informed by her own lived experiences. Through a diaristic process emerges an artistic Clay County Almanac that navigates history and creates new pathways that allow for ease.

Brown is a self taught artist and was selected to be a 2024-25 Durham Art Guild / Black on Black Project Artist in Residence that culminated in her solo exhibition “Remember, I’m With The Cosmos”. Brown has upcoming residences at Blue Mountain Center and Vermont Studio Center.
